The Gift Economy

It shows up out of the blue, during holidays, community events, and more. Why do we give? Simply, because it makes us feel happy! Perhaps you want To Pay It Forward With A Cup Of Coffee or you want to sponsor a child? Whatever the reason is, giving is a part of our nature everyday people are giving their time, guidance and resources to those they love, and even to strangers!

Dr. Gary Chapman talks about giving as one of the five languages of love in The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts. He says one way that people can express feelings of love in their relationships is through gift-giving. Image how that positive feeling, which gift-giving fosters, could impact our economy – creating markets based on the exchange of gifts and services without the incentive to make a profit. “A lot of things that we use money for we’d probably be happier if we met those needs on an informal, local level,” says Charles Eisenstein, author of Sacred Economics. He believes that by going back to a more localized, gift-based economy we would help combat feelings of alienation and isolation that people are experiencing in our society.

In turn, it would protect the integrity of local communities that are struggling in our modern economy. Ultimately, participating in a gift-economy gives us intangible rewards such happiness, gratitude, a sense of community and self-worth. We know that the free exchange of information and ideas is a privilege that must be used wisely. We shall endeavor to shape our global village to be inclusive for all its villagers to kindly give and create an economy out of giving. There are many resources available to us for playing a part in a gift economy, and we appreciate you for giving SimplyWishes the opportunity to provide a platform to do just that.
